Efficiency of Lowest-Unmatched Price Auctions
نویسندگان
چکیده
In Lowest-Unmatched Price Auctions (LUPA) all participants pay a bidding fee and the lowest bid placed by only one participant wins. Many LUPAs do not specify what happens with the item on offer if there is no unmatched bid. The item may remain with the auctioneer which may appear unfair given that the auctioneer collects the bidding fees. We show that in a symmetric Nash equilibrium of a LUPA with known prize both players and the auctioneer will have an expected profit of zero. Moreover, LUPAs may be seen as a valuerevealing mechanism. JEL Classification: C71, D44

Strategic Analysis of Auctions
In many markets, transaction prices are determined in auctions. In the most common form, prospective buyers compete by submitting bids to a seller. Each bid is an offer to buy that states a quantity and a maximum price. The seller then allocates the available supply among those offering the highest prices exceeding the seller’s asking price. The actual price paid by a successful bidder depends ...
متن کاملA comparison of multi-object auction formats
We compare the performance of three alternative multi-object auction institutions: simultaneous ascending auctions with the hard closing rule, simultaneous ascending auctions with the soft closing rule, and simultaneous first price sealed bid auctions. Among the three formats, the simultaneous ascending auction with the soft closing rule is the most efficient and produces outcomes closest to th...
متن کاملFear of Losing in Dynamic Auctions: An Experimental Study
We analyze the implications of different pricing rules in discrete clock auctions. The two most common pricing rules are highest-rejected bid (HRB) and lowest-accepted bid (LAB). Under HRB, the winners pay the lowest price that clears the market; under LAB, the winners pay the highest price that clears the market. This pricing difference creates stronger incentives for bid shading under LAB. Wh...
متن کاملVerifiable Offers and the Relationship between Auctions and Multilateral Negotiations*
We use the experimental method to compare second-price auctions with verifiable multilateral negotiations in which the sole buyer can credibly reveal to sellers the best price offer he currently holds. Despite the two institutions seeming equivalence, we find that prices are lower in verifiable multilateral negotiations than in second-price auctions. The difference occurs because low-cost selle...
متن کاملComparing Public Procurement Auctions
This paper contrasts two auction formats often used in public procurement: first price auctions with ex-post screening of bid responsiveness and average bid auctions, in which the bidder closest to the average bid wins. The equilibrium analysis reveals that their ranking is ambiguous in terms of revenues, but the average bid auction is typically less efficient. Using a dataset of Italian public...
